They have been training since the beginning of term on both Wednesday and Friday mornings. And it certainly paid off for twenty-three Wenona athletes from Years 3 to 6 who competed in 49 events at the IPSHA Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park. Some were competing for the first time, others competed in their fourth successive IPSHA Carnival, all made a huge effort all term and enjoyed the day.

Great results from four impressive athletes put them in the IPSHA team to compete at the Combined Independent Schools Carnival coming up on September 13:

Jessica of Year 5 ran her best in the 9 years 100m sprint to take fifth place and into the IPSHA team. Joining her in the team is Jemma of Year 6 who ran a wonderful fourth in her 12 years 800m.

Two middle-distance runners from Year 5, Zoe and Sarah excelled and not only in their pet track events. Zoe took first place honours in the 11 years 800m, first in her age in 1500m, as well as fourth place in the high jump.

Amazingly, Sarah of Year 5 wiped the field in several 10-years categories. She took first place in the 800m, first in 1500m, first in high jump, also first in shot put, as well as second in the discus.

“Sarah and Zoe are both outstanding all-round athletes,” says Mr Rodden, Assistant Director of Sport. “Middle-distances of 800 and 1500 are their pet events but they do extremely well in field events too.”

These results follow Sarah’s efforts in August at the Schools Sport Australia Cross Country Championships when she ran 2k in 7.32 for third place. She was also part of the NSW team which came second in this cross-country race.
