The Independent Theatre has been part of Sydney’s cultural life for more than a century. In 2013, in a demonstration of our commitment to the arts, Wenona purchased this gem from the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust, adding it to the School’s list of treasured assets. We were delighted to take stewardship of the theatre, which is on Miller Street, North Sydney, just steps away from our grounds, and had long hosted School drama performances, music recitals and other presentations and functions.
Wenona now operates the 303-seat theatre as an educational and performance facility for our students as well as a venue available for public hire. It is fitted with a Steinway concert grand piano, new lighting rig and state of the art projection facilities and is suitable for drama, opera, dance, chamber and classical music as well as conferences and meetings. We are continuing the Independent’s long tradition of encouraging emerging artists and supporting community groups by offering the venue at a concession for those who meet the criteria.
