Junior School (Kindergarten to Year 6)

In the Wenona Junior School, curiosity and a love of learning are fostered and young minds discover and develop their strength and place in the world. Our girls flourish in a girl-centred community at a stage when they are capable of remarkable intellectual and personal growth. We support every girl to pursue her passions, think and learn independently.

A strong foundation

Every Junior School girl learns what it means to be grounded in purpose, confident in her abilities and outward-focused in her impact.
Our Junior School consists of Woodstock (Kindergarten to Year 3) and Hooke House (Years 4 to 6). Each of these learning communities provides stage-appropriate learning and personal development programs where students feel known, connected and valued.

Academic Program

Our Junior School provides a well-rounded education with a strong academic focus, preparing our girls for a lifetime of learning.
Through dynamic learning experiences and contemporary teaching approaches, our Junior School provides a well-rounded education with a strong academic focus, preparing our girls for a lifetime of learning. We encourage and support our students to be responsible and curious learners, independent thinkers and skilled communicators.

Curriculum

Our learning and teaching philosophy is underpinned by strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and thinking skills. A transdisciplinary curriculum fosters a culture of inquiry and engagement, with students developing deep subject knowledge and the skills to apply their learning across disciplines. Through the investigation of local and global issues and real-life contexts, they are challenged to pose questions, solve problems and think creatively and critically.

Teaching

Dedicated classroom teachers maintain a clear focus on literacy and numeracy alongside core curriculum areas. Junior School students also benefit from a comprehensive specialist program with expert teachers in  Languages, Library, Music and Visual Arts.

Teaching staff support each girl to feel valued and known while challenging her to reach her academic potential. We acknowledge and celebrate individual achievement and personal growth and encourage all students to explore possibilities, strengthening academic courage and confidence.

Individual learning

Each student receives appropriate academic challenge through learning support, enrichment and extension opportunities. Our Learning Enrichment team works in partnership with teachers and families to support personalised learning for every student, including targeted programs for those who need additional support or who would benefit from further extension.

Wellbeing Program

We support each girl from Kindergarten to Year 6 to develop a strong voice and the confidence to use it.
The Junior School is a place where girls develop a positive sense of self and community and step forward with curiosity and courage in their endeavours. Emphasis is placed on the development of personal and interpersonal skills, working collaboratively with others, communicating effectively and decision making. There is also a strong focus on social justice and thinking beyond oneself.
We support each girl from Kindergarten to Year 6 to develop a strong voice and the confidence to use it. Whether advocating for themselves, standing up for others, solving a problem collaboratively or seeking support, girls learn that speaking up is safe and valued.
Class teachers monitor the holistic growth and personal development of each student, including their sense of belonging, participation and individual achievement.

Co-curricular

At Wenona, we recognise that learning happens everywhere. Co-curricular opportunities are plentiful for our girls, with a breadth and diversity of student clubs, creative and performing arts, debating, and sports opportunities beyond the classroom.

Co-curricular opportunities

Participation in co-curricular activities enables our girls to hone their talents, refine their skills, learn more about self-discipline, teamwork and commitment to others, and expand their social connections.
