The Wenona Experience

The Wenona experience is personal, purposeful, and powerful. It is shaped by research, informed by global best practice and grounded in 140 years of educating girls to serve and shape their world.

The Wenona experience

At Wenona, every girl takes centre stage. She holds the leadership roles, fills every seat at the debate table, and drives the conversation – not because the room has been cleared for her, but because this is her school, built around how she learns, leads and grows.
Our conviction is clear: girls thrive when they are free from limiting expectations, when they are encouraged to choose bravery over perfection, and when they know they belong in every space they enter.

The Renaissance Woman

Wenona’s philosophy of education is informed by the concept of the Renaissance woman.

The Renaissance woman

Immersed in an education that spans academic learning, deep thinking, ethics, philosophy, culture and humanities, creative expression, STEM and physical development, the Renaissance woman cultivates emotional intelligence and explores a deeper understanding of her identity. She finds purpose through connection to community and gains confidence in the exercise of leadership.

Renaissance Studies: understanding self and world

Wenona’s unique Renaissance Studies program strengthens our girls’ journey of understanding self and world, encouraging them to be creative, resilient and articulate, with a readiness for adventure and a drive for knowledge and purpose. This is achieved in two ways. First, these qualities are woven into the curriculum, teaching practice and culture of our School, along with the expectations we place on our students. Second, through our Renaissance Studies courses from Years 7 to 12. Inspired by the Socratic method of teaching, these courses are based on cooperative dialogue and debate, encouraging critical thinking with a focus on considering, contemplating and questioning.

The Renaissance Studies Framework

Junior School: building strong foundations
An introduction to the Renaissance Studies program begins in the Junior School with a Socratic approach to learning. They work through moral dilemmas – questioning assumptions, testing reasoning and learning to hold a considered ethical view.
Middle School: building inner confidence
Middle School students build the tools to understand their inner world, strengthen their emotional intelligence and navigate the complexities of adolescence with confidence.
Upper School: navigating a wider world
Upper School students explore and develop essential skills for navigating adolescence: managing relationships, understanding digital citizenship and developing ethical decision-making. Students delve into topics ranging from social psychology to global issues.
Senior College: ready for what’s next
Senior College students engage with global perspectives and complex geopolitical situations, developing the critical thinking skills essential to navigate our interconnected world. They also explore financial management, workplace navigation and independent living, ensuring our graduates step confidently into their next chapter.

Raising leaders

Leadership development for our girls is sequential and embedded across academic, wellbeing and co-curricular programs and experiences. Students benefit from tailored programs, peer mentoring, workshops and a safe learning environment.

Raising leaders

At Wenona, leadership learning is not reserved for the few. In a school where every student leadership role is held by a girl, our students are encouraged to find their voice, pursue what drives them and inspire others. They learn to see themselves as leaders and to use that perspective to make a difference.
Through formal and informal leadership roles our girls enrich the life of our community and beyond. As they progress through the school they take on greater responsibility, developing the skills and confidence to lead with purpose and integrity.

Leadership in action

Formal leadership roles provide meaningful opportunities for contribution and impact. Our Prefects, Sport Captains, House Captains and Portfolio Captains take on responsibilities that extend well beyond title. The Student Representative Council meets weekly to plan and implement awareness and fundraising campaigns, giving students a direct role in shaping the life of the School.

Bravery over perfection

At Wenona, leadership is not an add-on. All girls have the opportunity to develop complex competencies such as conflict resolution, strategic thinking, and emotional intelligence. Alongside this learning they benefit from being heard, challenged, and trusted to take the lead.
From Kindergarten, our girls are drawn into open, honest conversation – the kind that builds confidence and ambition. They learn to speak, to question, to disagree well, and to listen closely.
We teach our girls that failure is the critical partner to confidence. Girls are encouraged to choose bravery over perfection, and to recognise that mistakes are part of how capable young women are formed.
By the time they leave Wenona, our students have gained the voice to speak in any room, the judgement to lead with integrity, and the conviction to serve and shape their world.

Service

Our motto, Ut Prosim, that I may serve, has guided Wenona since the School’s founding. It is woven into every stage of School life, grounded in the belief that true education comes with responsibility.

Ut Prosim: a culture of service

Our motto, Ut Prosim, that I may serve, has guided Wenona since the School’s founding. It is woven into every stage of School life, grounded in the belief that true education comes with responsibility. Wenona’s Community and Service Learning Program engages students from Kindergarten to Year 12 opportunities in hands-on projects, volunteer work and service activities that broaden their outlook, build initiative and strengthen their connection to the world around them.

Service learning across the School

Service Learning is embedded in the curriculum and always age-appropriate. In the Junior School, the focus is on developing an awareness of the needs of others and environmental responsibility. As students move into Middle School, Upper School and Senior College, projects grow in scope: House-based and community-based fundraising, student-led groups such as the Music Therapy Group and the Gender Equity Group, and partnerships with local and national charities.
A defining experience for Year 9 students is the Service Learning Tour. They have the opportunity to travel with members of our staff to remote communities in Australia or other countries during school holidays. Following a rich pre-tour learning program, their work is shaped by local needs: constructing school facilities, supporting wildlife conservation, undertaking village maintenance or contributing to marine research. Our students step beyond their known experience and return with a deeper understanding of their responsibility as global citizens.
In Year 10, students complete community service outside of school hours through our Service Learning in the Community (SLIC) program. They take on placements with organisations across Sydney, gaining firsthand experience of the contribution they can make closer to home, with many students choosing to continue to contribute and make a difference through volunteerism.

A legacy of service

From Kindergarten students learning to care for their environment to Year 12 students leading campaigns and travelling to communities in need, the thread of Ut Prosim runs through every year of a Wenona education. Our students leave School not only with strong foundations for what lies ahead but with an enduring commitment to making a difference.

Wellbeing for Girls

At Wenona, we recognise that student wellbeing is a necessary precondition for students to thrive. We understand the different stages of social, emotional, biological and cognitive development from Kindergarten to Year 12 and seek to respond to these corresponding needs.

A holistic approach

Wellbeing sits at the heart of a holistic education and is foundational to all that we do. Our approaches to learning and wellbeing are integrated, providing practices carefully designed to support our girls to flourish — in the classroom, in their relationships, in co-curricular life and through their contribution to community. We celebrate a growth mindset, encouraging students to strive for their personal best rather than perfection, and to step confidently beyond their comfort zones.

Responsive to every stage

Our evidence-informed wellbeing program and practices support the social, emotional and cognitive development of our students while responding to their evolving needs from childhood through adolescence to emerging adulthood. Wenona’s Junior, Middle, Upper School and Senior College structure enables appropriate focus and dedicated programming at every stage.

Connection through House

Our House system further strengthens our students’ sense of belonging, engagement and purpose, with the opportunity to connect across year levels through carnivals, competitions, creative and performing arts, sport and service.

Counselling and specialist support

Where more specialised care is required, students may access Wenona’s CaPS Team (Counselling and Psychological Services). Clinical, Registered and Educational Psychologists provide personal counselling support. The CaPS Team also delivers evidence-based workshops for families, helping them understand the challenges that may emerge for girls through childhood and adolescence.

Health Clinic

Our Health Clinic is staffed by Registered Nurses who provide day-to-day health care and assistance for students requiring specific medical support while at School.
