Co-curricular

At Wenona we recognise that learning happens everywhere. Co-curricular opportunities are plentiful for our girls across both the Junior and Senior School, with a breadth and diversity of student clubs, creative and performing arts, debating, service, adventure and sports for involvement in the life of the School beyond the classroom.

Beyond the classroom

We encourage students to pursue their interests and expand their horizons, challenging them to explore the opportunities available to them. Participation in co-curricular activities enables our girls to hone their talents, refine their skills, learn more about self-discipline, teamwork, commitment to others and expand their social connections.

Sport

Participation and inclusion are at the heart of our sporting program, as we seek to encourage and inspire all athletes, from novice to elite. Our broad offering provides rich opportunities spanning non-competitive recreational activities to elite sports development. Whether the girls are competing in regional, state or national competitions or simply having fun in a social team, they are encouraged to do their best while learning the benefits of teamwork and building their physical coordination.
From Year 3 onwards our girls have the opportunity to compete in interschool competitions organised by the Independent Primary School Heads of Australia (IPSHA) or the Independent Girls’ Schools Association (IGSA – Sport) on Saturday mornings and at the respective Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics and Gymnastics Carnivals, with the prestigious Tildesley Shield Tennis Tournament for Senior School girls. Girls also have the opportunity to participate in swimming squads and local community-based competitions for select sports.
Talented Athlete Program: Wenona recently launched its Talented Athlete Program (TAP), to recognise and support high-performing student athletes in Senior School. Through tailored academic support, flexibility, specialist workshops and timetabled TAP sessions, we anticipate that the program will support these students to thrive both in and beyond the sporting arena. We believe that sport and outdoor activities are about more than physical fitness. They develop the whole person, fostering resilience, leadership, self-reliance, resourcefulness and purpose.

The Arts

The Co-curricular Arts program at Wenona encompasses Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Programs run throughout the full school year and encourage students to explore creativity, expression and collaboration through performance and artistic endeavour.
Dance: Our extensive dance program includes Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary and Lyrical classes at Open and Eisteddfod level. Students can learn for enjoyment or audition for competitive troupes, with all students participating in our Annual Dance Concert.
Drama: With activities including our School Drama production, Interhouse Drama, Theatresports workshops and Drama and Speech lessons, our students have the opportunity to engage in a range of drama experiences that extend and build upon their skills.
Music: Students are encouraged to further develop their musical skills by joining one of our musical groups, including choirs; orchestra; string, wind, brass and flute ensembles; string quartet; concert band and rock band. Extra-curricular private Music tuition is available in piano, strings, woodwind, brass, drums and percussion, voice, musicianship and theory, and students have the opportunity to sit the Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) exams.
Visual Arts: Students from Years 4 to 11 are encouraged to further develop their artistic skills, experiment with materials and express ideas through a range of artmaking practices. Programs are offered each term to develop specific techniques and skills. These offerings broaden from foundational creative arts in Junior School to visual arts, textiles and more independent artmaking practices in the Senior School.

Debating and Public Speaking

The ability to construct a clear argument, listen critically and speak with confidence in front of an audience serves students well beyond school. Wenona’s Debating and Public Speaking program develops these capabilities from Year 5, building skills that transfer directly into academic work, leadership and the professional world.

STEM

Students from Kindergarten to Year 11 have the opportunity to explore robotics, coding and engineering through hands-on workshops and competitive challenges. Running alongside the School’s curriculum-based science and mathematics programs, it provides practical problem-solving and creative design learning experiences.
The program is structured in two pathways: development programs open to all students and competitive teams for those ready to test their skills against other schools.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

From Year 9 onwards, Wenona students can participate in the highly regarded Duke of Edinburgh International Award, which recognises a young person’s successful journey of self-discovery and development, renowned by employers and universities alike. Its balanced program develops the whole person, mind, body and soul, in an environment of social interaction and teamwork. The Award is offered at three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Cadets

The Wenona Shore Cadet Program offers students the opportunity to develop leadership, build relationships, collaborate and learn problem-solving skills through challenge and service.
Students join the program in Years 9 to 11 and continue their involvement through Year 12.
The program is both Cadet-initiated and Cadet-led, giving students authentic voice and agency as they design, implement and lead activities. While staff provide oversight, Cadets are entrusted with genuine responsibility for planning and decision-making.

Senior School Clubs

Students can participate in a wide offering of student-led clubs that nurture creativity, curiosity and community connection. These initiatives encourage students to lead, collaborate, share ideas and explore their interests in ways that enrich both themselves and the broader School community. Current offerings range from the Global Diversity Club, Creative Arts and Craft Club, Amnesty and Model Nations clubs, to the Music Therapy Club and the school magazine team.
