A Milestone Foundation Day

Wenona's 139th birthday brought special significance as we marked the 90th anniversary of Foundation Day itself, and welcomed back Alumnae celebrating important milestones.

The Big Gym buzzed with energy as students, staff, and special guests gathered for what has become a cherished tradition. Since 1935, Foundation Day has evolved from a simple commemoration into a vibrant School-wide celebration capturing Wenona's enduring spirit.

This year's distinguished speaker, Alumna, Sophie Watson (2020), delivered a message that resonated with us deeply. Now working as a television journalist in Wollongong, Sophie's path from Wenona student to scholarship-winning reporter exemplifies Wenona’s philosophy of embracing every opportunity.

"I can honestly tell you that the foundations you are building here at Wenona will set you up for success and allow you to take on any challenge without fear of failure," Sophie told the assembled students, sharing how her willingness to "throw her hat in the ring" at School − from Cadets to water polo and debating to STEM Club − shaped her career trajectory.

Her journey from nervous university student to confident journalist illustrated a key theme: The importance of finding and trusting one's voice. "As women, we can be so quick to second-guess ourselves," she reflected. "At the end of the day, you will never know what you are capable of unless you try."

The ceremony honoured tradition while celebrating innovation. Our youngest student, Sienna from Kindergarten, carried out the time-honoured cake-cutting ceremony, symbolising the continuity between generations of Wenonians. The Alumnae Spirit Award recognised Year 12 student, Jessica, for her ‘extraordinary commitment to service activities within and beyond the School community’.

The formal morning tea in West Commons provided the perfect backdrop for reconnections, with our Alumnae from the Classes of 1965 and 1955 marking their 60th and 70th anniversaries respectively. The atmosphere remained festive throughout the day, as students enjoyed their House cupcakes before launching into an enthusiastic House Choral Festival.

Sophie's closing message captured the essence of Foundation Day perfectly: "Find ways to embody our motto, Ut Prosim, that I may serve ... the opportunities are endless and it all starts from caring and giving it a go."

As our 90th Foundation Day anniversary concluded, it was clear that this milestone celebration had achieved its dual purpose − honouring Wenona's remarkable history while inspiring the next generation of strong, independent women ready to serve their communities and shape their world with confidence and the School Values of Courage, Strength, Grace, Wisdom, and Kindness.
