Strike Up the Band

More than 160 Wenona musicians from Years 3 to 12 gave up their weekend to rehearse, workshop and perform together, sustained by a shared love of music and some delicious food.

When the final notes faded at the closing concert, many in the audience could scarcely believe what they had just heard. Some of the music had only existed as dots on a page 48 hours earlier.

That is the particular magic of Wenona’s annual Instrumental Music Weekend – an intensive two-day program that brings the School’s instrumental ensembles together with professional musicians to rehearse, refine and, in some cases, learn entirely new repertoire from scratch. This year, the stakes were higher than usual. Every piece workshopped over the weekend is destined for the stage of Sydney Town Hall on 10 June, when Wenona presents its landmark 140th Concert.

The Athenaeum, the Independent Theatre, and the Small and Big Gyms were all pressed into service as rehearsal and tutorial spaces, each one humming with activity from morning until late afternoon. Between sessions, pizza and Zooper Doopers were consumed in large quantities – the unofficial ‘fuel’ of any serious music weekend.

But beyond these preparations, the weekend carried a quieter significance. Junior students had the chance to enjoy some downtime with the outgoing Year 12 musicians. It was an opportunity for the School’s youngest and most senior performers to bond outside the intensity of rehearsal.

For those Year 12 students, many of whom have attended Music Weekend from as early as Year 3, the closing concert was something more personal. They were recognised and celebrated for their years of dedication; a moment that acknowledged not only their talent, but the sustained commitment that has carried them from their earliest rehearsals to this milestone.

The culminating concert was a testament to the calibre of the students and the professional musicians who guided them.

Now, their attention turns to 10 June and Sydney Town Hall, where the fruits of this weekend, and of years of musical dedication, will be on display at the Concert.
