I moved to Australia, from England, in 2000 and arrived in Sydney, knowing no-one and having to deal with a new climate, a new house and the most daunting prospect … a new school.
Though never having met anyone from Wenona, I had seen the distinctive uniform in the school prospectus so when visiting the seal pool at Taronga zoo, I noticed the familiar cream hat, blue and white striped dress and black shoes. As my mum introduced herself to the girl’s father, this small Wenona girl ran up to me with a beaming smile, took my hand and introduced me to the seals. I instantly felt accepted and made a life long friend within minutes.
However I soon discovered after attending Wenona for just one day that this warm and welcoming nature was not unique to this one girl, for all the girls at the School welcomed me into every aspect of school life and I soon felt like a real Wenonian.
Over the years at Wenona I have realised that one of the real strengths of the School is the way in which it values and appreciates all of us as individuals. We are encouraged to be true to ourselves and accept everyone for their uniqueness. We are encouraged to celebrate our differences whilst working within the values and principles of the Wenona community.
We are all proud to be part of the School but are equally proud to be developing into strong individuals. The 2010 Year 12 girls are certainly caring, empathetic, intelligent and enthusiastic young women, willing to represent themselves and support their friends.
As we enter our final year at Wenona, every day will bring new experiences and new challenges but with a positive attitude and the encouragement of our teachers I’m confident that we’re more than capable of dealing with whatever comes our way. With this in mind, I say to the class of 2010: let’s make the most of every opportunity, strive to be the best that we can and grow stronger in our friendships with one another.
