Where her spirit grows tall

Where her spirit grows tall

Middle School years are a time when a girl is transformed cognitively, emotionally, physically and socially. We therefore provide many ways for our girls to learn more about themselves and pursue new interests.

Excursions, camps, performances and lively class discussions tap the innate energy of Middle School girls. But excursions are more than just visits to interesting places. Reflective observation is central to the excursion experience in the Year 9 cultural awareness project. Girls are given the opportunity to "connect" their field experiences, their classroom learning and their broader life.

Leadership opportunities

Wenona values and encourages student voice.

Middle School girls are represented in all areas of school life. Through the Student Representative Council, their voice is heard as they work and interact with teachers and other girls. Opportunities exist for leadership development and experience as Middle School girls volunteer for public speaking roles, leading assemblies, charity initiatives and other school projects.

Ut prosim

Our Middle School girls contribute significantly to the wider community. They are eager participants in school and community-based activities, where they establish meaningful working relationships with peers and adults. This involvement builds self-esteem, trust, respect, and good hearts – the marks of ‘women of spirit', who make a difference in the world.

Service-learning can take many forms. Our Middle School girls can participate in the annual Erakor Global Service and Friendship trip, assisting in a local project and then spending time reflecting on the skills, values and knowledge they have acquired.

All Year 9 girls are required to complete a minimum of ten hours community service outside school hours. Each girl finds her own service placement. Her experiences are documented in her SCIP (Student Community Involvement Program) diary.

Building relationships with people in circumstances different to their own helps girls grow in cultural and intergenerational understanding. And exploring social issues, when seen from others' perspectives, develops an appreciation of the diversity of human society.

Global Service Learning

Wenona Middle School Global Service Learning culminates in a Service Learning Journey to our sister school, Erakor Bilingual School in Vanuatu. Wenona students integrate service into their academic curriculum by creating and implementing subject-related and inter-disciplinary service learning projects in the school in order to provide teaching assistance. Service learning provides students with opportunities to acquire real-life skills, apply their academic knowledge, and develop their sense of civic responsibility and make a difference in their school, community and world. Global Service Learning allows school curriculum to come alive for students and teachers and it connects school curriculum to meaningful experiences. These experiences make school more relevant to students’ lives and participants learn through active participation in service that meets community needs.

Outdoor education

Through our outdoor education program, girls develop confidence, maturity, respect for others, and an appreciation of the environment. Friendships are formed and a girl's sense of self is strengthened. Girls are challenged by dynamic programs where they can take "safe risks". They are encouraged to take on leadership roles, to better understand the needs of others, and to strive for a sense of balance in their lives.
